The Google Doodle
So Google put up a new doodle today to commemorate Earth Day 2015. A nice looking doodle with a bit of animation of the world turning. When clicked you get a quiz to work out what animal you are including questions like “What are you up to on a typical Friday night?” and how you react if someone is wearing the same outfit as you at a party.
Turns out I’m a giant squid which means:
“You can achieve anything to which you put your mind and/or your massive tentacles.”
Not quite sure what that means but sounds good and a fun diversion that got me thinking a bit more about Earth Day.
So I went and found out a bit of factual stuff that I didn’t know about Earth Day. If that kind of stuff bores you then here is a link to donate to the Earth Day Network cause. http://www.earthday.org/
If you liked the quiz more than you are prepared to let on then try the Guardian one as well, although, it is a bit more serious: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/quiz/2015/apr/22/earth-day-quiz-google-guardian
The factual stuff about Earth Day
It is held every year on April 22nd. Having started in 1970 to demonstrate support for environmental protection it is now considered to be the beginning of the environmental movement. Some of the changes it has help motivate are the creation of Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.
Local initiatives on Earth Day 2015
Earth Day 2015 includes a number of local initiatives for beach, road and park clean-ups and also some larger initiatives like cleaning the Great Wall of China.
There is even an Earth Day Anthem, to the tune of the “The Ode to Joy” melody by Beethoven
Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world

For the “Visual Frame of Mind” People
I actually wrote this post because I got an email showing me a lightbox of Earth Day 2015 images so click here to see what inspired me.
For the “Audio aware” people
So nothing to do with Earth Day but I was listening to a Jools Holland album on spotify while I wrote this. The album was “Sirens of Song” and here is link to the album for those who like a bit of big band swingy jazz stuff: https://open.spotify.com/album/6V2rjEdJenqFpZDug9maSA
